Early life and training

Ana de Armas grew up in Cuba, in the coastal town of Santa Cruz del Norte, east of Havana. She wanted to act from a young age. As a teenager she won a place at the National Theatre School of Cuba in Havana, where she trained in stage acting. [VERIFY: age at enrolment, usually given as 14] That early, disciplined training still shows in how precise her work is today.

Career beginnings in Cuba and Spain

Cuban film debut

Her first film role came while she was still a student, in Una rosa de Francia (2006), a Spanish-Cuban production directed by Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón. A few more Cuban and Spanish projects followed.

Stardom on Spanish television

At 18 she moved to Madrid. Her big break came with the mystery series El Internado (Antena 3, 2007 to 2010), in which she played Carolina. The show was a major hit in Spain and made her a familiar face to young audiences there. She also appeared in Spanish films such as Mentiras y gordas (2009).

Ana de Armas career: the Hollywood breakthrough

She moved to Los Angeles in the mid-2010s and learned English while she auditioned for roles [VERIFY: year of move, often cited as 2014]. You can see her full list of roles in our Ana de Armas filmography.

Knock Knock and War Dogs (2015–2016)

Her first English-language films included Eli Roth's thriller Knock Knock (2015) with Keanu Reeves. She then had supporting roles in Hands of Stone and War Dogs (both 2016).

Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

Her role as Joi, a holographic companion in Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi sequel, was her first big international showcase. It is a role that relies almost entirely on warmth and suggestion.

Knives Out (2019)

Rian Johnson's whodunit gave her the central role of Marta Cabrera, a caring nurse caught up in a family's scheming. It earned her a Golden Globe nomination and many people see it as the turning point of her career.

No Time to Die (2021)

Her short but memorable turn as CIA agent Paloma, opposite Daniel Craig, was one of the most talked-about parts of the Bond film.

Blonde (2022)

In Andrew Dominik's Blonde she played Marilyn Monroe, a fictionalised version of the star. The film divided critics, but her performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She was the first Cuban-born actress to be nominated in that category [VERIFY: this record claim]. The same year she also appeared in The Gray Man and Deep Water.

Ghosted and Ballerina (2023–2025)

She co-starred with Chris Evans in the action comedy Ghosted (2023), then led Ballerina (2025), an action film set in the John Wick universe.

Acting style and screen presence

In our view, her greatest strength is that she makes small, quiet moments feel important. In Knives Out she plays a decent person surrounded by cynics and keeps her sincere without ever being dull. In No Time to Die she shows comic timing and action skill within a few minutes of screen time.

We also think her career shows smart range. She moves between thrillers, prestige dramas and big franchise films, so she is hard to typecast. As a bilingual performer, she has also become a visible role model for Spanish-speaking actors working in Hollywood. Our red-carpet looks and style evolution posts follow how her public image has developed along the way.
